The Advance Training Institute is a field unit of the Directorate General of Training, Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of India. The history of the institute dated back to 1957, when it was started as ‘Central Training Institute for Instructors’ at Aundh, Pune. In the year 1963 shifted to present premises at Mumbai. The institute has the unique privilege of inauguration by our first prime minister, the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on March 20, 1963. The training then was confined to Craft Instructor Programmes. Subsequently in 1967.

With the incorporation of Chemical Trades under Apprentices Act 1961. A Basic Training Centre for imparting basic training and related instructions was started in 1970 for chemical trade apprentices. To contribute towards industrial development of the nation, Advanced Vocational Training System (AVTS) was launched jointly by the Govt. of India, United National Development Programme (UNDP) and International Labour Organization (ILO) in 1977, to meet the needs of the industries of the fast changing technology. With vast expansion and diversification of its training activities. To make it more effective the institute was upgraded and renamed as Advanced Training Institute in May 1982.

The institute has completed glorious more than 50 years of skill building by conducting short term and long term courses. Many industrial establishments, institutions and organizations have utilized the know-how of this institute and benefited in achieving higher production with quality.
